Sitting on the terrace of the restaurant, I am surrounded by the heady perfume of coffee blossoms in the fields below. For only 2-3 days, the coffee bushes will be full of delicate white flowers which smell heavenly and portend the future harvest.
We have experienced a drenching with the first rains of the season about 10 days ago. Rain induces flowering only when preceded by a period of water shortage which we typically have often from December until March or April. Water stress is apparently essential to break the dormancy of coffee flower buds. Now we can expect to have a bountiful harvest in about 8-9 months time.
